Although I do give an occasional page of repetitive addition or subtraction facts, I usually choose problems based on the students’ needs or difficulties.

After posing these questions, I ask the children to talk with their neighbor about ideas for carrying out such an investigation. As the children talk, I circulate around the room, listening and handing out the writing prompts. I call the class back together so students can share their ideas and discuss the writing task. I ask each pair to choose a paragraph in a book. Many choose a paragraph from a book they are presently reading or from one of the books in the classroom book display. I ask that the paragraphs be relatively short.
