Indeed, one of the greatest weaknesses of some writers about history, as opposed to writers of history, is their excessive concentration upon verbal artefacts and narrative prose discourses. School buildings represent in a most tangible way, priorities and beliefs about a variety of elements of education, including such intangibles as the nature of childhood and society, of pedagogical purposes and practices.
