In 1903, Chamberlain launched an even more comprehensive attack with his protectionist campaign for an Imperial Zollverein. In the Liberal defence, dogmatic commitment to unilateral Free Trade and an idealised patriotic notion of the Westminster model with its supposed purity of politics went hand in hand. Here were two sources of the Free Trade revival which swept across Edwardian Britain and defeated the protectionist forces which had made headway abroad, in the white settler colonies like Canada and Australia as well as in Europe and the United States.
