Weltkrieges gehörte die von den deutschen Truppen besetzte belgische Küste zu den stärksten mit Mari­neartillerie ausgestatteten Küstenabschnitten. Auf diese Ver­längerung des nördlichsten Teiles der Westfront hatte die englische Marine sofort nach der deutschen Besetzung häu­fig FeuerüberfäTle von Schiffen aus unternommen, beson­ders betroffen waren hier die Häfen von Ostende und Zee-brügge. Zur Abwehr begann die deutsche Marine mit der Verlegung von ortsfesten Geschützbatterien an diesen Kü­stenbereich. Obwohl die Arbeiten an den Stellungen bereits im November 1914 begonnen hatten, konnten erst Anfang 1915 die ersten leichten und mittleren Geschütze aufgestellt werden. Vordringlich wurden die Arbeiten an den Batterien „Friedrichsort" ( four x 28 cm SK L/22) „Lübeck" (4 x 15 cm SK L/35) und „Mole" (6 x 8,8 cm SK L/30 und 2 x 15 cm belg. Beutekanonen) der three. Hafenschutzgruppe Zeebrügge vorangetrieben, so daß diese ab Februar 1915 feuerbereit waren.
