Lee 32 - Choreographing Asian America refers to these plays as ‘‘family stories,’’ in which the lives of Asian Americans are portrayed in mundane terms of everyday life. Plays written and performed in English allow Asian American characters to tell a legible story and demystify foreignness. The vocabulary of abstract movement poses a difficult challenge in the retelling of Asian American stories. Unlike the ways in which dance has been written into diasporic African cultural history—as a mode of resistance to slavery, Jim Crow laws, the civil rights movement, and institutional racism— there is no pan–Asian American discourse about the role of dance in Asian America.

Over time, I found that it became increasingly difficult to write about the Rad Asian Sisters as a group. My worry about how my own experiments would be perceived in class shifted my attention away from observing how others worked. Instead of relating to the Rad Asian Sisters as participant-observer, I took ‘‘The Amazing Chinese American Acrobat’’ as a hands-on opportunity to work my way through the relationship between choreography and representation. A result of a self-assigned task—make an Asian American performance—the interlude is a meditation on choreography as a research method to understand both the choreographic process of making aesthetic decisions and its attendant representational fallout.

As a result, Asian American performance art is often compared to and contextualized as an alternative to Hollywood film and television representations, rather than performance techniques or traditions that an artist is trained in or is drawing from. Performance work that deals with themes of oppression, the public portrayal of the specificity of Asian American experiences, and the insistence on Asian American hipness validates a project of continuous consciousnessraising that occurs within an undergraduate academic setting.
