1 —Bopete, Crip Much has been written about Crip and Blood gang culture and individual members, but there is surprisingly little information on the organizational characteristics of these two gangs. Although both gangs have existed since the late 1960s, very few descriptions of their size, structure, operations, and other organizational characteristics exist. 2 We should know more given their longevity but for whatever reason, few researchers and outsiders have penetrated either gang. Consequently, we are left with accounts from past and present members along with occasional journalistic depictions.

It was triggered by what happened to Marquette Frye, a 21-year-old black man. Frye was pulled over for suspicion of driving while intoxicated. The highway patrol officer, convinced Frye was intoxicated, ordered the vehicle impounded. When Frye’s mother, the owner of the car, arrived on the scene, the situation escalated and became physical when pushing started. Police backup was called and arrived to find that a large hostile crowd had 19 20 Crips and Bloods gathered. In the eyes of the black community, the stop and overreaction provided just another example of police brutality and mistreatment of people of color.
