On what basis should we believe that the world exists independently of our knowing it? First, we must recognize that such claims are hypothetical, derived from the transcendental argument of what the world must be like for science to be possible. “The status of propositions in ontology,” Bhaskar (1997) explains, may thus be described by the following formula: It is not necessary that science occurs, but given that it does, it is necessary that the world is a certain way. It is contingent that the world is such that science is possible.
Rorty’s concern is to cognitively establish a context in which humans can be free agents, and that context is discourse or language. As Rorty (1980) explains, “Man is always free to choose new descriptions (for, among other things, himself)” (362). But Rorty’s notion of “freedom” is worth examining.
