Aching for her. As he shifts the car into park, he rushes to grasp the device. The smooth plastic is cool on his fingers as he slides it out of his pocket. He raises it to his chest level and marvels at its illuminated screen. In the darkness of the unknown variables of his trip, one glowing object has performed exactly as planned. The glowing suddenly reminds him of energy, and he panics. He pats his left pants pocket, and finds nothing. Frantically he slides his hand into his right pocket and pulls out a tangle of wires with a bulb dangling from it.

Surely someone will see the mess. Someone will clean the mess. Maybe they’ll see the hat. He raises his hand to bite his nails, but he keeps it from touching his face, not wanting to fall back into that old habit again. It seems inappropriate to do so on his return to the past. If things are going to be better, they have to be different. Either his inhibiting apprehension will fade away, or in the least he’ll have to deal with it differently if he wants a happier life. Two children run in and out of the streams of people that lead to the two main exit doors of the gym through the lobby and into the parking lot.

With his other hand, he yanks at the terminal on the end of wires, trying to pull it completely off. He grunts as he struggles. “Oh, dear,” complains from the hallway. The terminal pops off and drops to the floor. ” Ignoring the question, he looks at the three wires he has just exposed. He takes the bare tip of the red and taps it against the black. Sparks. The detector should have been getting power. Bending down, he picks up the detector off the sink. He wraps the black wire around the far right prong on the detector’s plug and then he shoves the red onto the other side.
