Whereas Biff was the popular athlete as a youngster, it is now ironic that it is Bernard who is seen as the sportsman. 3. Even though Willy seeks Bernard's advice about what happened with Biff, as soon as Bernard mentions Biff's trip to Boston, Willy becomes defensive and yells angrily at Bernard.

Death of a Salesman can be read as a drama of the common man being defeated by a society which drains the common man of his energy and then drops him. In fact, Mr. Miller's intense concern for the fate of the common man caused him to align himself with the theoretical possibilities of Communism. He was subsequently investigated by the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1947 and was cleared completely by this committee.

And certainly, a large portion of this day will be devoted to dreams and illusions. The description of the stage is also important. Many of the significant effects of the play are achieved through the use of the stage setting. For example, when Willy gradually fades into one of his illusions, this is accomplished on stage by a gradual diminishing of the lights on the other parts of the stage and with a stronger light coming in on Willy. When the play is in the real present, the characters go in and out the doors of the framehouse, but when the action is in the past, the actors walk through walls and pay no attention to the stage setting.
