In The Birth of Wuthering Heights (1998), Edward Chitham advances a theory, based on the little evidence remaining for the novel’s timetable of composition, that the addition of most of the material beyond this point was prompted by a publisher’s rejection of the three-novel set which the Brontë sisters sent out in 1846 (Charlotte’s The Master—later reworked as The Professor, Emily’s Wuthering Heights, and Anne’s Agnes Grey). When The Master was rejected outright, Charlotte withdrew from the enterprise and committed herself instead to the writing of Jane Eyre.
The 1850 text was for many decades the accepted one, and is the version that almost all readers had in front of them during the period of the novel’s accession to literary fame. When the editors of the 1976 Clarendon edition, Ian Jack and Hilda Marsden, surveyed the novel’s publishing history for the World’s Classics edition, they remarked that it was ‘easy to see why’, at that date, ‘most modern “editions” are reprints of the edition of 1850’. , 1995, p. xxxvii). They therefore took 1847 as their copy-text, incorporating editorial corrections of obvious errors, but leaving the paragraphing and the dialect presentation of the first edition intact.
